Is John McCain really a maverick?

It's called politics, you have to have a base of supporters to get chosen. Would it have been wiser for him to go against GOP principles to get there vote? Because surely the left would support him.... right. It's called politics, this is how people play the game, even with your information, McCain still reaches across the aisle more than Obama and Clinton combined.
