How do u IM an offline buddy on AIM? (Details Below)?

I know u can IM someone while they are offline on AIM and when they sign back on, an IM window will pop up with IMs that they get offline..how do u do that? I have gotten offline IMs from people before...can someone tell me how? Thankss =)
