What exactly does this statistic mean?

So, someone told me this statistic: 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer sometime in their life. This is really shocking to me because I wasn't aware how common cancer was. So does this mean that between me (female) and my 2 close friends (also female) one of us will get cancer because that would be 3 women. Or, is there a chance that none of us will get cancer because other women that have gotten cancer would balance out the statistic? Sorry never understood statistics :(
